Agrarian transition and opportunity windows for agroecological innovation

Agricultural context

Smallholder agriculture is the norm

In both regions studied, smallholder family farming is predominant. On the slopes, smallholders cultivate upland annual crops such as glutinous rice, maize, cassava and Job's Tear and perennial tree crops such as teak and, more recently, rubber on relatively small plots ranging from 0.8 to 5.3 hectares

Depending on topography and access to lowlands, farmers also cultivate rice in irrigated or rainfed paddy fields. The picture on the left shows a typical landscape of the extreme south of Sayaboury Province with lowland paddy fields on the foreground and a diversity of annual and perennial crops on the slopes (i.e. upland rice in fallow, cassava and rubber trees)

Other livelihood activities

Other livelihood activities include livestock farming - both small (e.g. poultry) and large (e.g. cattle, pig) - as well as hunting, forest product collection and small-scale off-farm activities.
