Stage 1

Extensive, subsistence-oriented agriculture

This stage is characterized by productive lands covered by extensive, subsistence-oriented agriculture. The picture below shows shifting cultivation of rice which is the main staple crop of the uplands of Laos. Subsistence farming is based on a rotational sequence of cultivation followed by fallow and forest regrowth during several years. Long term fallow periods allow for soil fertility regeneration and represent a sustainable way of cropping in the uplands.
