Intensive market-oriented and specialized agriculture
This stage is characterized by degrading lands almost exclusively covered by intensive market-oriented monoculture. The picture below shows conventional plough-based tillage on the slope for intensive monocropping maize cultivation. Fallows and forests have disappeared from the landscape and soil fertility is depleted rapidly.
