Stage 4

This stage is characterized by a long engagement in intensive commercial agriculture and important land degradation issues which, in turn, push smallholder farmers to diversify their activities (mixed farming systems and off-farm activities). The picture below shows mixed farming systems with intensive maize cultivation in the foreground and background, and rice paddy in between. Marked gully erosion is observed on the slope with negative impacts (silting) on paddy production.
